Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindfulness is the conscious awareness of the present moment, which by focusing our attention and controlling our breath, we can learn to reduce stress and optimize the learning capacity of the brain.
Through classroom counseling lessons over the past 2 years all students K-5 have been learning about and practicing Mindfulness as a tool to handle big feelings. Classroom lessons all center (in some way) around 'being a good boss of yourself'. We learn that when feelings become too 'big' they try to be the boss of us and that's not OK! Our feelings are an important part of all of us, but they shouldn't make up say or do things that are hurtful to ourselves or others. Mindfulness is a tool to use to manage those big feelings.
