Hello everyone! I know that there are a lot of households that got some more bummer news this past week - Summer Rec baseball and softball is officially cancelled. Now I'm not sure about your house, but in mine this was no kind of good news....
I think that the potential for summer ball was one big shred of 'summer' hope that life could MAYBE return to a LITTLE bit of normal....and now that's gone. As a parent and coach of both baseball and softball teams over the years, I'll be honest and say that there have been moments I thought it would be kind of okay to not have so much running and 'busy-ness' in May and June. Well careful what you wish for, even in the small moments I guess, because now its come to be and I'm bummed too! Bummed for my kiddos, bummed for other's kiddos, bummed for the people who put so much work into creating these awesome opportunities for kiddos, bummed for extended family that loves to come watch, bummed for no yummy Culver's frozen custard in a HUGE container for cheap ( )....too much bummed! I'll also be honest and say that I'm NO substitute as a pitcher compared to other coaches, 4th grade pitching phenoms or 7th grade softball slingers....if I didn't already know that, my kiddos have made it very clear to me lately! All that said, it occurred to me this weekend that we can't stay stuck in bummed....about anything! Of course summer rec ball being cancelled is not earth-shattering in many ways and there are plenty of things that are much harder for families, but the truth is we just can't stay stuck in bummed. Whether we are young or older, we can't do it for ourselves, for our kiddos, for our significant others or anyone that relies on us. We have to keep working to move past bummed however we can. I do believe in the ideal of 'fake it til you make it' as a platform to keep yourself moving toward a better direction. This just may be our biggest challenge yet to that ideal. I know that my house has had many moments over the past few months that required a lot of 'fake it' to move toward 'make it.' So now, in regard to summer rec ball bummer, I'm going to use it again.
We decided last night now that the weather is settling into summer nice, we're going to keep our evening baseball and softball time set aside for playing at our house. Maybe it won't always be ball we play (my kids can only get hit by so many of my pitches in one week!), but the time that we'd already be putting toward some family time is going to stay that way. Of course there's plenty to get done and other things to distract, but we're going to try and keep it set on the what that time is really about....hanging out and having some fun. I hope you can find some of that with your family as well as we continue on in all of this!
