In this section of English IV, we focus on developing language skills and acquisition while preparing you for the rapidly approaching real world. We will spend time on each of the five major categories on English: Reading Literature, Reading Informational Texts, Writing, Speaking (and Listening) and Language Usage. At the same time, this section prepares students for many of the everyday realities that face them beyond high school. We do read one novel (Into the Wild), one non-fiction book (Nickel and Dimed), some short stories, and some biographical experiences as well.
The course also pairs with CSI and so, some days we will merge with Mrs. Schneider’s class in the library. Half of you will work on the CSI research project and half will develop your historical research papers. This will switch each semester. As those projects are due at the end of each semester, we will do our heavier reading in first and third quarter. At times, this class will become quite self-directed and will allow you a lot of choices. We will discuss this as we move forward. When the CSI and Historical Research projects are due in second and fourth quarter, they will count as your semester test.
