Suggestions for Success
There are many things that the student can do to increase success. Some of these have already been referred to.
1. Use class time wisely:
Any extra time given in class should be utilized to do assignments, get help, look over past skills, or work ahead on activities even if they are not due. If you get done early, you can always review your flashcards!
2. Stay caught up:
This is VERY important as often one skill follows another. After being absent, the best way to get caught up is to get notes from a reliable person and come in if necessary. That way I can specifically address any problems right away.
3. Be in school:
The best way to get information is first-hand. Participating in class and being there to communicate with myself and other students is a good way to learn. Activities and experiments are difficult to make up.
4. Study as we go along:
Do not wait until the last minute to get help. A VERY good way to study is to RE-WORK problems. That way you can check to see if you did them correctly right away. (Sometimes just looking at your notes isn’t enough.)
5. Show work:
I give partial credit for work that is partially correct. To get partial credit, this work MUST be shown. Often, you MUST show work to get FULL credit.
6. Take good notes:
Students should write down notes and examples done in class and show the work for those. Then if they get stuck, they can look back at these for help. (Highlighters / colored pencils are helpful for note-taking.)
7. Participate in class:
Ask questions. Answer questions. Take an active role in class activities. Talk about skills and activities in your groups. The more you talk and communicate about each topic, the better you will learn it and remember it!
GENERAL CLASS GOALS
1. Quality Work:
Students should take the time and effort to do the BEST work they can.
2. Communication:
It is very important that students can organize, show, and explain their work. They need to be able to communicate verbally and in written form with good English. Logical reasoning and drawing and supporting conclusions will also be emphasized.
3. Cooperation:
Students will often work in groups to conduct experiments or investigations. Helping each other benefits both sides. Teamwork is an important job skill as well.
