Homework Tips
1. Establish a routine - set a specific time such as right after supper to do homework.
2. Remove distractions - do homework in a quiet, well-lit place that does not have distractions. Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions such as people come and going. Make sure siblings are not engaged in distracting activities near them.
3. Make sure that they have all the necessary materials such as paper, pencils and a dictionary to complete the assignments.
4. Prioritize - Encourage your child to work first on those assignments that are due tomorrow. Then tackle the tasks that are due later. A calendar to write down when assignments are due may be helpful. Encourage your child to complete hard assignments first when they are fresh and ready to work. Divide the assignment into smaller parts to make it more manageable and less overwhelming.
5. Check understanding - Be sure your child understands new assignments before he or she starts working on them. Check to be sure that your child understands the directions.
6. Guide, but don't correct - If your child needs help, offer ideas that can help him or her sort out the problem, but don't give the answer. Explain the meaning of unfamiliar words, review spelling or multiplication tables or otherwise assist your child with the homework.
7. Get organized for tomorrow - Remind your child to pack the homework and planner in the backpack before going to bed.
8. Have your child "Recharge" themselves by taking a five minute break when your child becomes frustrated or having trouble focusing. They can "Recharge" by having a glass of water and healthy snack such as string cheese, peanut butter sandwich, crackers, or fruit. Another way to "Recharge" is to do stretching exercises or going for a short walk.
9. Make a family activity that precede or follow homework a regular part of the homework routine. Shared activities assure the child that they will have time with their parents, making it less likely that they will seek attention while doing homework.
10. Praise and complement your child when he or she puts forth good effort and completes tasks. Encourage them throughout the time to teach them the importance of perseverance.
