What is Academic and Career Planning (ACP)?

Academic and Career Planning (ACP) is a student-driven, adult-supported process where a student creates their own informed decisions for post-secondary success. Students who are knowledgeable about post-secondary options are better able to connect their school experiences with their long-term goals and planning for life after high school graduation.  Information based decisions are obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in the PI-26 legislation requires public school districts to provide academic and career planning services to students in grades 6-12, beginning with the 2017-2018 academic year.  Parents, educators, school and community based organizations/ clubs, community business partners, area job centers and post-secondary institutions all play a role in supporting the academic and career planning process of our young people as they are educated for future employment.

The School District of Glenwood City outlines Academic and Career Planning (ACP) as: a student-driven, adult-supported process where a student creates their own informed decisions for post-secondary success. Students who are knowledgeable about post-secondary options are better able to connect their school experiences with their long-term goals and planning for life after high school graduation.  Information based decisions are obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills.

All students will graduate “College and Career Ready” which means they will:

• Understand how their unique strengths and interests align to a wide variety of future opportunities.
• Explore and understand their available choices for all post-secondary options.
• Prepare and maintain a personal plan for goal attainment that provides flexibility based on individual experiences.
• Develop a general understanding of how problem-solving skills and processes apply to post-secondary options.
• Effectively be able to succeed in the world of higher education.
• Help foster employment skills to support the transition into adulthood and beyond.
• KNOW their unique interests and abilities and how they are compatible with a variety of high school and post-high school opportunities.
• EXPLORE career clusters and pathways, labor statistics, education and training requirements, work based learning opportunities, Career and Technical Student Organizations, and certification and other learning opportunities.
• PLAN and maintain academic and career goals that provide flexibility based on individual experiences.
• GO with confidence upon graduation, with the ability to re-evaluate and return to the career process as needed.
